Ebook About
Inspired by Nigeria’s folktales and its war, Under the Udala Trees is a deeply searching, powerful debut about the dangers of living and loving openly. Ijeoma comes of age as her nation does; born before independence, she is eleven when civil war breaks out in the young republic of Nigeria. Sent away to safety, she meets another displaced child and they, star-crossed, fall in love. They are from different ethnic communities. They are also both girls.   When their love is discovered, Ijeoma learns that she will have to hide this part of herself. But there is a cost to living inside a lie.       As Edwidge Danticat has made personal the legacy of Haiti’s political coming of age, Okparanta’s Under the Udala Trees uses one woman’s lifetime to examine the ways in which Nigerians continue to struggle toward selfhood. Even as their nation contends with and recovers from the effects of war and division, Nigerian lives are also wrecked and lost from taboo and prejudice. This story offers a glimmer of hope — a future where a woman might just be able to shape her life around truth and love.  Acclaimed by Vogue, the Financial Times, and many others, Chinelo Okparanta continues to distill “experience into something crystalline, stark but lustrous” (New York Times Book Review). Under the Udala Trees marks the further rise of a star whose “tales will break your heart open” (New York Daily News).

Book Under the Udala Trees Review :

I don't recall how I came across this book, but it was on my Kindle and I had just completed reading another novel and so started this one. In general I have enjoyed Nigerian authors and this book did not disappoint. The story takes place in the late 1960's and I would call it a coming of age\personal discovery story. The pace was good. The characters were nicely developed, the background of the times was laid out well. The social struggle with change during the time matches some of the same level of conflict you see in the US today. I suppose the changes are universal across many nations and societies. I would recommend this book to Seniors in High School, College level and book clubs as a good read where one can discuss the impact of social change, religion and its changing role and the general struggle of people to just fully be themselves without fear.I also felt that the author did an excellent job humanizing the characters. They were real on so m any levels and their behavior, while at some times disappointing it was expected. Social change and how we look at and treat people is a slow process.
As I had to read this for a class, I am always a little worried about those stories but I am so glad that I got to read this story. Honestly, I probably would not have read it otherwise, but I think that this book is very important.Very simply put, this book follows a young Nigerian woman as she discovers who she is and tries to be herself while also surviving a war-ridden Nigeria. This book is beautifully written and a quick read. I enjoyed every minute of it and will be trying even harden to expand my cultural genres for reading.I highly recommend this book for anyone and everyone! This book opened up my mind to realize that we cannot be taking what we get in life for granted because there are people who are worse off. It also makes me reflect upon the progress made here in the United States concerning the LGBT community compared to other places like Nigeria, but that we too still have issues to work on and are no where near perfect.
