Ebook About Laurence Dalziel is worn down and washed up, and for him, the BDSM scene is all played out. Six years on from his last relationship, he’s pushing forty and tired of going through the motions of submission. Then he meets Toby Finch. Nineteen years old. Fearless, fierce, and vulnerable. Everything Laurie can’t remember being.Toby doesn’t know who he wants to be or what he wants to do. But he knows, with all the certainty of youth, that he wants Laurie. He wants him on his knees. He wants to make him hurt, he wants to make him beg, he wants to make him fall in love. The problem is, while Laurie will surrender his body, he won’t surrender his heart. Because Toby is too young, too intense, too easy to hurt. And what they have—no matter how right it feels—can’t last. It can’t mean anything. It can’t be real.Book For Real (Spires Book 3) Review :
I've not read too many BDSM themed books because I'm usually turned off by the theatre that accompanies it - leather costumes and masks and people calling each other master and slave. It's always struck me as a bit ridiculous and cringeworthy. For Real was a revelation - it has absolutely none of that. Stripped of the external signifiers of dominance and submission it comes down purely to the relationship and desires and exchange of power between the two main characters, and is so much more erotically charged as a result. At the same time, For Real is gloriously and engrossingly romantic.Laurie is a 37 year old doctor, a little lonely, a little unhappy, who gets his need to submit filled by unsatisfactory anonymous encounters following the failure of his 10 year relationship. They scratch the itch, but don't satisfy his wish for "the correspondence of desire in love". Toby is an intelligent and sensitive 19 year old, a little bit lost in life and with little support from his loving but distracted and unconventional mother, who is a famous artist. He also has a burning desire to be dominant in the bedroom, but hasn't been able to satisfy his needs and no one in the BDSM scene takes this somewhat scrawny, fresh-faced post-adolescent seriously. Until he meets Laurie at a club, and they both feel an instant attraction. Other reviewers have commented that Toby is too young and unsure to really be a convincing Dom - and perhaps the wide eyed innocence is overdone just a wee bit, but I don't think it's a problem because we see that what Laurie really wants has everything to do with submitting to someone he feels a connection to, and nothing to do with feeling overpowered by someone bigger and stronger.Despite their electric connection, Laurie is reluctant to get involved with someone so young, but Toby gradually wears down his resistance. I wasn't sure the age difference would work either, but like Laurie, I ended up being completely drawn in. I think it works because although Toby is young, he is wise beyond his years and has had the benefit of a rather bohemian upbringing. Similarly, Laurie's friends are unconventional types who don't see the age difference as a problem. There's no melodrama here, just the piecemeal breaking down of the walls they've each put up and gradual bridging of the distance between them. That's not to say there's not an enjoyable amount of angst and conflict and then satisfying resolution - that's what makes romance novels great - but it all feels true to life and emotionally authentic. It's heart warming and genuine and realistic and so lovely.Even if you don't think this is your thing - if you're not into BDSM or the age difference troubles you - I strongly urge you to give it a try. I finished it in one day and wanted to start all over again - it's just that good. Absolutely fantastic, and far more real than the usual fairy-tale, fantasy BDSM stories filled with Mr Perfect the Ultra-Super-Alpha Dom and his sidekick Super Sub the human whipping boy. It was wonderfully refreshing to read a story about a "real" Dominant - not perfect, not superhuman, not a model. Toby is delightfully human, full of flaws and errors and unrealized dreams - just as a 19yo should be. And Laurie is just as beautifully human - a bit of a drama queen, a bit self righteous, eminently and gorgeously flawed himself. They felt human, and approachable, and far more real and true to life than any BDSM book I've yet read. And even with their flaws, and their humanity, they still managed to express the absolute ecstasy of an idealized D/s S/M couple. Laurie's submission is all the sweeter for the choices he makes - my idea of the perfect submissive, one who can choose to walk away at any time but chooses to stay and submit. Willing, voluntary submission. And Toby's Dominance is gloriously responsible and deliciously sadistic, despite his youth and inexperience...and that youth and inexperience are beautifully portrayed at the most realistic (and often awkwardly hilarious) moments. But through it all, you can get wonderful glimpses of the incredible man he will become. Not for the smut seekers, this is a story for the sensuous reader, the one who wants to revel in the prose of it, and luxuriate in the rich emotional textures. Also available in an audio book, which is just as delightful an experience! I highly recommend both - this is going into my "most favorite books EVER" pile!
