Ebook About My name is Greer Galloway, and I serve at the pleasure of the President of the United States. When I was a girl, I received a warning. Keep your kisses to yourself.Twice I ignored it, and twice my heart was utterly, miserably broken. I didn't need to learn my lesson a third time. Instead, I swore off love forever. But President Colchester hasn't sworn me off--not by a long shot.I knew him as Ash, the soldier I once kissed in a circle of broken glass. I haven't forgotten his broken promises and forbidden desires. But the country knows him as the leader of the free world, all that stands between us and war.Desperate to have me, Ash sends his best friend Embry to bring me to him. He doesn't know about the secrets we also keep. Our own tragedies. Our own cravings. The second kiss. Soon, I find myself caught between past and present, pleasure and pain--and the two men who long for each other as much as they long for me. And as war and betrayal press ever closer, we tumble headlong into a passionate love affair that will change the world. From the USA Today bestselling author of Priest and Misadventures of a Curvy Girl comes a contemporary reimagining of the legend of King Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot--elegant, carnal, and unforgettable. This is Book One of New Camelot.Book American Queen Review :
SPOLERS MAYBE/PROBABLYIf you're like me and you like to read the 1-star reviews to balance out the 5-star, and you are reading the things about a woman falling in love with two men who happen to be best friends, two men who happen to be the most powerful men in the free world, about accidental incest, about a love triad which includes the love two men have for each other...then please realize that this set of books is the re-telling of King Arthur, his queen Guinevere, and knight Lancelot. The things that happen in this book are all part of that centuries old tale...albeit it fact or fiction. This is part one a three-part series, and it ends on a cliff-hanger. As a stand-alone, I think it's the weakest of the three books, but it's necessary as a stepping stone to get to the next two books. On it's own, it's NOT a bad book, not at all; it's just as hot and dark as you'd hope from a Sierra Simone book.Greer is a young woman, and through this book we get some sense of her thoughts and emotions, we understand her background and her life as a young adult, but there's not really much personality here beyond her fascination and yearning for these two men. We understand her motives, and we get to be her as we fall in love with these two men. It's hot, it's dirty, and it's fabulous.Yes it's over the top that she sees Ash just one time for one hour and is completely devoted to him, and he her. Yes it's over the top that she runs into his best friend Embry after learning of Ash's upcoming marriage, and also falls in love with Embry almost as quickly and deeply. Yes it's unrealistic that she goes from being practically a virgin to being a full-fledged submissive, one who accepts all of the things that Ash wants from her. But my, what lucky coincidences. What a lucky girl. Many others have mentioned that they would have loved her more if she had stood up for herself a little more, make Ash work a little harder, and I second those thoughts. I get that she's submissive, but still... It's not enough to dislike this book though, nor to take a single star away from it.This is erotica, so there is a lot of 'action', and it's very bluntly worded. If you're squeamish or like your heated moments to be whispers of love and admiration, this is NOT for you. And, if you' have issues with same sex relationships, this is also not for you. I've never been interested in M/M relationships, I'm not against it in any way, it's just not my thing and I've never had any interest in reading more of it...but if Sierra Simone writes only M/M for the rest of her career, I'll read every bit of it.SO, in conclusion: Yes this book has its weaknesses, yes there's a lot of astronomical coincidences (as in most romance novels), but if you like dark, honest, gritty, brutal, sublime love stories, then you're going to love this book. But please, make sure you read at least the next book so you get a real sense of the importance of Greer's story. Skip if you don't care about copyediting or fact-checking; this sounds uptight even to me. I wanted to read something that would take my mind off My Life and I thought, menage, modern fairy tale, Camelot redux, I've heard so much good about this author and this series from reviews, podcasts, I'll take it. Even if the submissive character is a total dummy-dumb. Well. It appears I have some limits to how well I will enjoy a book if it's not properly edited. The breathless suspenseful tone of the narration and the import imparted to us by her falls short the actual. I don't want to get into all the reasons why the characterization and plot didn't work for me; others have done that much better than I can and I'm a slow writer so I'll be at this all day instead of reading something that I actually want to read, but here are a couple things that broke me out of the narrative construct: Greer at twenty-five is a professor at Georgetown, and chapter 17 opens with Greer entering an event in which a Chopin string quartet is playing. These may not be a big deal to some people but they broke me out of my tenuous bond with this book, and I'm not sure I'll be able to finish if I keep seeing stuff like this. It is very, very uncommon to have a professorship in a university at any level unless you have a PhD, and Greer has an MA. This would hardly qualify her for an adjunct position. Maybe her family connections got her this job but that isn't intimated here, so she apparently got it all on the strength of her master's degree and being super smart or something. Oh and it's a master's in medieval lit. Good luck edging out the tenured in this highly specialized field. Also, Chopin wrote for the piano. He wasn't one for string quartets. I think he used stringed instruments in some piano concertos, but that's it. There might be arrangements for string quartets, but I find it hard to believe that the White House would hire a string quartet to play some hackneyed arrangement of Chopin when they could be actually playing some of the greats who excelled at compositions for string quartet, like Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich...a lot of those old dead guys. Also the last thing that really bothers me is how "president" and "vice president" even when not used as part of the address is capitalized. It looks juvenile and unprofessional and it throws me off every time. I was prepared to try to ignore this but other tiny things add up, like repetition within sentences (didn't need to use "both" two times), and then I'm more upset with myself, like why can't I let this go and just enjoy a story, why am I such a stick in the mud. Like what's the big effing deal. But it does matter to me. Immersion into a world, into an outright fantasy such as this, requires attention to detail. So maybe I'll finish this, but after whining about it here to this extent I'm leaning toward not. I'm disappointed but I'm glad I didn't get the other two books. Good grief it's a trilogy.
