Book Gamechanger (The Bounceback Book 1) Review :

Gamechanger is a full-on, full-length dive into the near-future world that Beckett introduced in her 2018 novella "Freezing Rain, a Chance of Falling." That novella's main character returns as the father of Gamechanger's main character, Cherub "Rubi" Whiting, a VR gamer turned public defender who, as her story opens, has taken on a very unusual client. The novel centers on the mystery of who or what Luciano Pox is, but other story elements unfold into the past and future of Beckett's early-22nd-century world. The action is as brisk and far-ranging as that of any thriller, very satisfying to this plot-loving reader, but two other aspects of this novel are what I loved most. One is the people, especially Cherub and her sometime nemesis Gimlet, although everyone in the novel is, no matter their augmentations or implants or transformations, richly human. The other is the depth, breadth, and ingeniousness of Beckett's worldbuilding, enhanced by the deftness of its introduction. In fact, things such as the tech and social structures of her future, as well as the backstory of how the world lurched from now to then, are not so much introduced as insinuated; they are the taken-for-granted warp and weft of the story. Long on immersion and short on exposition, Gamechanger required me to be an active, interrogating reader--and rewarded me with characters about whom I cared damnably and a world I won't soon forget. That world, by the way, is exhilarating and terrifying. It has begun to claw its way back from massive ecological disaster and is thus a hopeful vision of how humankind might just be able to fix at least some of the mess it is currently making--an example of the emerging hopepunk genre. The society that has emerged on the far side of the chasm, however, is not exactly cozy. Beckett has extended present-day trends such as the gig economy, social capital, and the allure of gaming and VR in ways that I sometimes found as disturbing as they are logical. Despite its shininess, her near future is not one I'd particularly care to live in, but it's clear that those who do so are lucky to have it.Full disclosure: I am acquainted with the author and have reviewed some of her work in the past. I do not review work by people I know unless I am unreservedly and sincerely enthusiastic.
I made it through Part 1 (of 3) of this book before giving up. Readers who delight in fandom, tumblr, social media, and Dr. Who style science fiction (ie, not 'hard') may well find this enjoyable, but as the extensive worldbuilding basically extrapolates a future based on all my internet pet peeves, it wasn't for me. Black Mirror, or to a lesser extent Who, can make compelling episodes set in ridiculous universes work because of their time constraints and focus on plot and characterization. Gamechanger felt like an 8-hour twitch stream of people roleplaying in an MMO with some kind of attention-economy. I tend to relapse every few years, but every time I stop pouring hours into games, it's for the same reason: I realize what a waste of life it is to spend hundreds if hours farming virtual scrap to convert into virtual junk. Gamechanger spends a lot of its text describing said virtual junk, virtual avatars (if I'd known they were called 'toons' in-world I would have stayed far away from this title), and virtual busts. Seriously, almost every female character's bust is mentioned when they're first introduced.Natalie Naudus provides excellent voice work for the audiobook version.I'd suggest anyone expecting a taught thriller, or cyberpunk along the lines of Neuromancer or Snowcrash, to maybe download a sample first. This was recommended by one of my favorite authors, Linda Nagata, and it is nothing like her work. It's not really much like Ready Player One, or .hack, REAMDE or other VR/AR staged stories either; something about Gamechanger makes it feel like a story being told by a Dungeon Master who's very invested in the world they've drawn up - not my cup of tea.
